Important Conversation

This week I was privileged to participate in the production of Ancient Faith Radio entitled “Two Natures: Examining Chalcedon and Communion.” Though I am a New Testament scholar, and this is not my specialty, I was delighted to participate in the conversation throughout. I consider this a key topic today, both for the sake of truth, and for the sake of charity, since I thoroughly enjoy the hospitality of St. Cyril’s Seminary in Sydney Australia, where I have lectured and taught with great joy. The discussion is fraught not only with debate, but with different definition of key terms, and with many players on a spectrum, not only a polarity between Chalcedonian Christians and actual Eutychians. At issue as we talk with our friends who are Oriental Orthodox is the meaning of the word “nature,” whether we should speak of one Person the God-Man “in two natures,” or (as they do) “One nature/person out of two natures.” Interconnected with this is the matter of whether the God-Man had both a divine and human will, always in harmony, or only one will. Oriental Orthodox accept the first three councils, and have no substantive disagreement with the final council on icons. It is council 4, 5, and 6 that remain the sticking points, and we continue to talk about this together.

I am an Orthodox Christian, professor emerita of Scripture, wife, mother of 3, and grandmother of 25. Though officially retired, I continue to write and lecture on subjects such as C. S. Lewis, theological anthropology, and children's literature. (I have written two novels for young people!) Angus, my cavapoo, keeps me entertained.

  1. I am reading Ecstasy and Intimacy, in which you mention your book “God’s Treasure in Jars of Clay”. I would very much like to read this but have. been unable to find where it can be purchased.
